A telescope built to map the dark side of the universe just left Earth on a million-mile journey. NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope rode a SpaceX Falcon Heavy into orbit on Sunday morning, kicking off what the agency calls a new era of cosmic discovery.
What just happened
Roman lifted off at 7:26 a.m. EDT (Aug 30) from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Falcon Heavy separated from the observatory 31 minutes into flight and its boosters safely returned to the launch site for reuse, while the telescope’s solar panels and lower instrument sun shade deployed about an hour and 23 minutes after launch.
Now on a roughly three-month journey, Roman is heading to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), about 1.6 million km from Earth. Once there, it will pair a wide field of view with crisp infrared vision to probe deep into cosmic history.

Why it’s called a discovery machine
Roman is a flagship observatory built to tackle the biggest open questions in astrophysics:
- Dark matter and dark energy, the invisible forces believed to shape the cosmos.
- Exoplanets, worlds beyond our solar system, including the search for habitable ones.
- Cosmic history, surveying vast stretches of sky faster than any prior NASA observatory.
At its core sits the Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera with 18 4K detectors. Roman is designed to survey the universe a thousand times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope and send back about 1.4 TB of data every day, the highest rate of any NASA astrophysics mission so far.

The spy satellite that became a telescope
Roman has an unusual origin. It was originally built for a US spy satellite program under the National Reconnaissance Office. That program was over budget and terminated, and the NRO donated the hardware to NASA in 2012, which repurposed it for cosmic exploration. The roughly $4 billion project is a repurposed spy satellite turned to the stars.
What happens next
Mission controllers will spend the next 90 days commissioning Roman’s instruments. NASA says the telescope should beam back its first high-resolution images before the winter holidays, with the agency anticipating a full first-image release by early 2027.
Roman builds on the work of earlier observatories such as the James Webb Space Telescope and Hubble. It also sets the stage for future missions like the Habitable Worlds Observatory concept, which could one day image Earth-like planets in the search for life beyond our solar system.
