Ray tracing is coming to mobiles thanks to OnePlus, OPPO, and Qualcomm

PHILIPPINES – Global technology brand OnePlus dedicates to bring users an immersive gaming experience by being involved with the co-development of ray tracing technology for Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, under the collaboration between OPPO and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Announced at the Snapdragon Summit 2022, the co-creation aims to introduce premium OnePlus smartphones that are equipped with outstanding gaming performance. The birth of AAA games on mobile platforms asserts the trend that mobile games have ushered in a new era in digital gaming. Mobile gamers nowadays are leaning towards having customized experiences by adjusting the game settings.

Additionally, players demand the same premium gaming experience from PCs on mobile devices. That’s why OnePlus continuously prepares solutions that cater to gamers’ growing needs.

To answer the demand, OnePlus seeks to apply ray tracing technology that mainly simulates the reflection and refraction of lights to make games look more realistic. This requires high computing power from high-end hardware and applying the technology from PCs to mobile platforms is challenging due to limited space.

“OnePlus strives to provide flagship performance products with fast and smooth experience to our fans. Thanks to our co-creation community, we can listen to our users’ needs and wants in mobile games and leverage this insight into our research and development. The introduction of mobile ray tracing technology extends our promise to mobile gamers to provide them with a smooth and immersive gaming experience,” said Kinder Liu, President of OnePlus.

The journey of OnePlus in bringing next-generation smartphones

Since its inception, OnePlus has developed its community and become beloved by global tech users. Co-creation with community members has always been in OnePlus’ DNA. Through the Open Ear Forum, OnePlus can communicate with 30 million RCC members to better understand their mobile gaming desires and needs, which drives its product development to provide better and more immersive gaming experiences.

In recent years, it has become a trend for game developers to transition AAA games from PCs to mobile platforms. As a result, smartphone manufacturers face substantial challenges in keeping up. OnePlus has picked up on this trend and has been improving in terms of screen, chipset, and software optimization, cooperating with game developers to ensure a more vivid and immersive gaming experience.

In 2019, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 7 Pro, equipped with a 2K+ OLED and a 90Hz refresh rate screen. The launch of the OnePlus 7 Pro indicates that developers could further improve the gaming experience on smartphones.

In 2020, thanks to the deep cooperation with Fortnite, the OnePlus 8, together with the OnePlus 8 Pro, became one of the first phones in the market that could run this game with 90FPS to deliver its signature fast and smooth gaming experience.

In 2022, OnePlus launched the Hyperboost engine, integrating three key technologies: General Performance Adapter (GPA), Frame Stabilizer, GPU Load Control (GLC), and LsTouch. This technology empowers the OnePlus device to have a fast and smooth experience with a short response time and a stable gaming frame.

By listening to mobile game players’ needs for better image quality and a more immersive gaming experience, OnePlus collaborated with OPPO’s engineering team to analyze the most frequent gaming scenarios that ray tracing technology could apply. Based on this, ray tracing technology was successfully brought to the mobile platform.

Mobile ray tracing technology improves games’ graphics and opens new opportunities for audio, autonomous driving, and virtual reality content creators. Developers no longer need to spend hours and hours recreating shadows. Instead, they can activate ray tracing to add realistic lighting effects to their content.

OnePlus will continue to work with partners to explore the full potential of mobile ray tracing technology and other technologies that will contribute to an overall improved mobile gaming experience.
