MANILA, Philippines (July 2026) — A leap into the unknown is often what transforms a local talent into a global name, and Zar Donato is currently living that transition. From her early days in independent cinema to her current international roles, the Pinay actress is establishing herself as a remarkable talent to watch on the world stage.

Honing the craft with industry legends

Donato was recently named one of the 20 finalists for The Master Series, an acting workshop organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines. This program allows her to refine her skills under the mentorship of acclaimed directors Jose Javier Reyes, Laurice Guillen, and Joel Lamangan. For a film graduate from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, this training represents a significant shift from the raw talent first seen in the 2018 film “Billie and Emma” to a more versatile performer ready for complex international narratives.

A homecoming for Maricel

The timing of this training aligns with a successful homecoming for her most ambitious project to date, “Maricel.” Featured in the 29th edition of the Cine Europa festival, the film gives local audiences a chance to see the performance that has been gaining international attention. Donato plays the title role of a homesick single mother working as an Overseas Filipino Worker in a remote, mountainous village in Cyprus.

The role carries deep personal weight for Donato. She shared that she accepted the project to honor the stories of Pinay workers abroad, including her own mother, who works as a caregiver. To capture the daily realities of the diaspora with authenticity, she spent time having extensive conversations with the Pinoy community in Cyprus.

Success on the global festival circuit

Before reaching Cine Europa, “Maricel” celebrated its world premiere at the 66th Thessaloniki International Film Festival. It also won Best International Film at the Manchester Film Festival 2026 and earned the Hellenic Film Academy Award for Best Greek Minority Co-production.

Donato is already looking toward the future with another Cypriot feature film titled “Kino Kalo,” which translates to “Common Good.” While the plot remains under wraps, the project signals her intent to keep exploring global, cross-cultural stories. Combined with the skills she is gaining at the FDCP Master Series, Donato’s career is clearly expanding beyond borders while remaining rooted in the strength of Pinay storytelling.
