As the festive season fills the air in the Philippines, Boehringer Ingelheim is encouraging Filipinos to make health a priority by focusing on kidney care. On November 30, 2024, the company, in partnership with Dialysis Philippines Support Group (Dialysis PH), Kidney Transplant Association of the Philippines (KITAP), and Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO), brought back the “It Starts With U: Get CheCKD” campaign at Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque City. The event aims to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease (CKD), a leading cause of death in the country.
CKD often goes unnoticed until it’s too late, with kidney function slowly declining over time. The festive season, marked by rich foods, alcohol, and stress, can worsen this risk, especially among those with underlying conditions like hypertension and diabetes. These health issues strain the kidneys, increasing the chances of kidney damage. The CheCKD campaign addresses these risks by educating the public through interactive experiences, like the “Check Your Choices Game Room,” a life-sized board game that teaches about kidney health in a fun, engaging way.
The event also included educational talks by renowned nephrologists Dr. Rhodora Valenzona and Dr. Clifton Pe, who highlighted the links between kidney health, heart disease, and diabetes. “Events like It Starts With U: Get CheCKD are crucial because they bring essential health information directly to the community. Early detection of CKD can make all the difference,” said Dr. Greta Cortez, Head of Medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim Philippines.
Beyond the interactive booths, attendees had the opportunity to receive free consultations and screenings, including a two-step kidney health check involving creatine and urine albumin-creatinine ratio tests. This initiative underscores the importance of regular health checks, especially during the holidays when health risks are heightened.
Boehringer Ingelheim’s commitment to health awareness aims to empower Filipinos to adopt healthier habits, ensuring that good health becomes the gift that lasts through the holidays and into the new year.
