Metrobank’s new docuseries asks: Is your ‘katatagan’ actually keeping you poor?

MANILA, Philippines (Apr 2026) — We pride ourselves on being resilient. We survive typhoons, traffic, and economic dips with a shrug and a “kaya natin ‘to.” But Metrobank is asking a tough question: Is that resilience helping you build wealth, or just helping you survive the next crisis?

The bank just launched Moneygurado, a campaign and docuseries that dives into the messy, cultural reality of how Pinoy handle money. It’s not about budgeting apps or generic tips. It’s about unpacking why we spend, borrow, and save the way we do.

From “bahala na” to “sigurado”

The term Moneygurado is a play on “manigurado” (to make sure) and combines “money” with “sigurado” (sure). The goal is to move Filipinos from reactive survival mode to intentional financial planning.

“Moneygurado is about helping Filipinos become more intentional with their money by understanding the ‘why’ behind their decisions,” said Metrobank Chief Marketing Officer Digs Dimagiba.

Real stories, real money problems

The docuseries kicks off with “Kapit Lang: The Filipino Way of Surviving,” featuring Audrey Cruz, founder of OnlyPans Taqueria in Makati. Her business thrived during the pandemic, only to be destroyed by a fire. Her story isn’t just about bouncing back. It’s about how true resilience requires preparation, like emergency funds and insurance, before disaster strikes.

Upcoming episodes tackle other cultural taboos:

  • “Utang sa Pelikula” with director Jose Javier Reyes explores how cinema and social media shape our view of debt and self-worth.
  • “The Price of Hiya” with historian Xiao Chua examines how shame and pakikisama lead to overspending just to fit in.
  • “Alkansya: The Filipino Art of Waiting” with author Michelline Suarez looks at how our history of saving can guide our future financial goals.

Why this matters now

With rising costs and economic uncertainty, the old “bahala na” attitude doesn’t cut it anymore. Moneygurado aims to replace anxiety with clarity. It acknowledges that values like utang na loob and hiya are part of our identity, but shows how they can sometimes sabotage our long-term security.

The series is available now on Metrobank’s Earnest website. For Pinoy viewers tired of generic financial advice, this might be the reality check needed to finally take control.
