Why are more Pinoys searching for LGBTQ+ identity than sex education?

MANILA, Philippines (June 2026) — More Pinoys are turning to search engines for answers about gender identity, sexual health and queer relationships, but new research suggests the information they need is still difficult to find.

Pink Bunny Philippines, a sexual wellness retailer, analyzed 15 months of Google search trends, website analytics and its own retail data to better understand how LGBTQ+ Filipinos seek information about sexual health and wellness. The report points to a widening gap between public curiosity and the support available through schools, healthcare and government.

Identity questions remain strong

The study found that while searches related to Pride Month events declined 19% year over year, searches about personal identity remained consistently high. Queries related to gender identity and intersex topics continued throughout the year, suggesting many people are looking for answers beyond annual Pride celebrations.

According to the report, the Philippines ranks second worldwide in monthly searches for “gender identity,” with around 14,800 searches each month. Pink Bunny said this reflects sustained interest despite the absence of a national anti-discrimination law specifically protecting LGBTQ+ Filipinos and ongoing debates surrounding the proposed SOGIE Equality Bill.

A growing gap in sexual health information

One of the report’s most striking findings is what it calls a “commerce gap.” Searches related to queer sex reached as many as 184,000 per month during peak periods, while searches for queer sexual wellness products remained minimal.

Pink Bunny argues that the imbalance highlights a broader public health issue, especially as the Philippines continues to report rising HIV infections.

The retailer also noted that more than 2,000 searches for strap-ons were recorded on its own website, suggesting some consumers are looking for guidance from private retailers instead of traditional health services.

“This is not a navigation problem; it is an inclusion problem,” Pink Bunny Philippines CEO Rozaira Angulo said.

Local language matters

The research also observed changes in the words people use when searching online.

Searches for “silahis,” a Filipino term commonly associated with bisexuality, increased by 26%, while searches for “tomboy” rose by 51%. Pink Bunny said the trend shows many users are searching using locally understood terms instead of Western LGBTQ+ labels.

The company believes healthcare providers and educators should consider these language preferences when creating educational materials.

Sex education searches fall sharply

The report also found that searches for “sex education Philippines” dropped by 95% over the past 14 months.

Pink Bunny linked the decline to ongoing challenges in implementing comprehensive sexuality education in schools, leaving many young people to rely on social media platforms and search engines for information that may not always be accurate.

“When a population searches for a term like ‘gender identity’ at this scale, they are seeking answers they are not getting from schools, healthcare providers or the state,” Angulo said.

More than a retail business

Pink Bunny said it hopes the research encourages broader discussions about inclusive healthcare and access to reliable sexual wellness information.

The full report, titled “LGBTQ+ Sexual Health and Wellness in the Philippines: What 2026 Search Data Reveals,” is available on the company’s website.

To coincide with the report’s release, Pink Bunny is offering a 10% discount on all strap-ons and anal toys purchased through its online store until June 30, 2026. Customers can use the promo code PRIDE10 during checkout.
