QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Jul 2026) — Research that stays locked in a laboratory doesn’t change the world. While generations of scientists have been trained to run experiments, very few are taught how to tell people why their work actually matters.
Dr. David Peralta is on a mission to bridge that gap. As the Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal ChemMedChem at global publisher Wiley-VCH, he recently returned to his roots at the Ateneo de Manila University to help researchers master the art of storytelling.
The secret to better science is the humanities
Peralta’s career path is anything but linear. Before heading a major global publication, he was an Ateneo student balancing chemistry with German studies. Today, he uses both to help scientists navigate the complex world of research ethics and communication.
He realized early on that while he loved science, he didn’t want to spend his life at a lab bench. Publishing offered a way to combine his passion for science with his love for writing and teaching. He believes that to be an effective scientist, you have to understand people and the social situations that shape how research is applied.
Navigating the era of artificial intelligence
With the rise of technologies like artificial intelligence, Peralta says that clear communication is more critical than ever. During his workshops at Ateneo, he shared insights on publication ethics and the evolving role of AI in academic research.
He encourages the next generation of Pinoy researchers to view their work as stories worth telling. For him, the experiment is only the first half of the job. The real work begins when that knowledge reaches the community it is meant to serve.
Level up your research skills
