Your GCash app can now get you through the turnstiles of Metro Manila’s busiest train lines. No beep card, no ticket booth, no coins, just your phone and the Commute QR.
GCash Commute QR is live on MRT-3 and LRT-2, which covers the two most used rail corridors in the country. The setup takes one minute, and the process is the same on both lines: scan in, ride, scan out.

Which train lines accept GCash right now
GCash works on MRT-3 and LRT-2 today. Those are the two lines with the Commute QR system up and running.
MRT-3 runs from North Avenue in Quezon City down to Taft Avenue in Pasay, hitting EDSA’s busiest stations along the way. LRT-2 runs from Recto in Manila across to Antipolo in Rizal, covering 13 stations.
LRT-1, which runs from Baclaran to Roosevelt, does not accept GCash yet. The government is targeting its contactless rollout within 2026, so check back later for that one.
MRT-7 has not been announced as part of any GCash fare system yet, so riders there still use beep cards and tickets.
Setting up GCash Commute QR in one minute
The official GCash help center lists three ways to open the Commute QR, and all of them are quick.
Tap Commute on the GCash home screen. Or tap View All, go to Pay, and tap Commute. Or tap QR on the bottom navigation bar, then Generate QR, and choose Commute.
The first time you use it, GCash will ask you to share consent and accept the terms and conditions. Accept once and you never see the prompt again.
Make sure your GCash has enough balance or a linked card before you ride. The fare is deducted when you exit, not when you enter.
How to ride MRT-3 with GCash
MRT-3’s cashless gates accept GCash Commute QR alongside other contactless payments, so look for the designated cashless turnstiles at each station.
Open the Commute QR in your GCash app and scan it on the validator at the entry gate. Wait for the green light or beep before walking through.
At your destination, scan the same Commute QR again on the exit validator. The system computes the distance based fare and deducts it from your GCash automatically.
One rule matters more than any other: use the same payment method to enter and exit. If you enter with Commute QR, exit with Commute QR. Switching to a beep card or a card tap mid trip will not work.
How to ride LRT-2 with GCash
LRT-2 launched its cashless fare system on July 13, 2026, and GCash Commute QR is one of the supported options at the fare gates.
The ride flow is identical to MRT-3: scan the Commute QR on entry, ride to your station, scan it again on exit, and the fare comes out of your GCash wallet.
LRT-2 riders are getting a bonus right now. Pay with GCash Commute QR from July 20 to August 20, 2026 and earn 20 percent cashback on each eligible ride, up to PHP 100.
That means cheaper commutes and a little money back, which is a rare win in Metro Manila transport.
The complete GCash train ride checklist
Before you leave the house, open GCash and confirm you have balance. A mid trip empty wallet means a stuck exit at the gate.
At the station, go straight to the cashless or QR marked turnstiles. Beep card lanes will not read your QR.
Scan the Commute QR on entry and keep the same QR ready for exit. If your screen locks, regenerate the Commute QR, but do not switch payment methods.
After you exit, check your GCash transaction history to confirm the fare deduction and any cashback credit.
What LRT-2 and MRT-3 fares cost with GCash
Fares on LRT-2 and MRT-3 are currently at 50 percent off for all passengers, a discount ordered by the DOTr that took effect March 23, 2026.
The discount applies automatically no matter how you pay, including GCash. On LRT-2, the shortest trips cost as low as PHP 6.50.
That makes the GCash route even cheaper: a 50 percent discount on top of cashback promos on select windows.
What to do if the QR will not scan
If the validator does not read your QR, check your screen brightness first. A dim screen is the most common reason a scan fails.
Make sure you opened the Commute QR specifically. Other GCash QR codes, like the ones used for payments, will not work at turnstiles.
If it still fails, step aside and retry. The gates can be slow to rearm, and blocking the lane stresses everyone out.
Worst case, ask a station staff member for help before entering. Getting stuck inside with a failed exit scan is a much bigger problem.
What comes next for GCash on trains
The DOTr is building the Philippine Automated Fare Collection System, or PAFCS, a master plan to unify payments across all rail lines and eventually buses and jeepneys.
LRT-1 is next in line, with its contactless rollout targeted within 2026. Once that goes live, GCash will cover every major rail corridor in the capital.
For now, MRT-3 and LRT-2 are where the magic happens, and both work exactly the same way.
