No need to cash in before you pay. GCash will soon let you link your Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards directly as a payment source, making in-store purchases seamless even when your wallet balance is low.
How it works
GCash, the Philippines’ number one finance superapp, announced that a new feature rolling out within August will allow users to link up to three Visa or Mastercard debit or credit cards to their account. Once linked, the cards can be used to pay for purchases in real time at any GCash-accepting merchant, effectively removing the need to manually cash in before every transaction.
Users can set a default payment card and manage or unlink cards directly within the GCash app. The feature is designed to give Filipinos greater flexibility in how they fund everyday purchases, from groceries to dining out.
Security and authentication
Card linking will be authenticated through a one-time password sent to the user’s registered mobile number. Eligible transactions will also be authenticated using biometrics or a phone PIN where available, providing what the company describes as a secure and convenient payment experience.
What this means for GCash users
For the millions of Filipinos who rely on GCash for daily transactions, this update removes a persistent friction point. Previously, insufficient wallet balance meant a trip to a cash-in partner or a delay in payment. With direct card linking, the transaction simply routes to the linked Visa or Mastercard, and the purchase goes through.
This is particularly useful for users who keep their main funds in a bank account or credit line but prefer the convenience of paying through the GCash ecosystem. The app already handles bills, remittances, online shopping, and QR payments. Adding direct card support makes it a more complete payment hub.
Rollout timeline
The feature is expected to roll out nationwide within August. GCash has not yet announced which specific Visa and Mastercard issuing banks will be supported at launch, but the company stated that the integration covers both debit and credit cards from the two major card networks.
