MANILA, Philippines (Aug 2026) – Gamers who spent their childhood wielding a Keyblade alongside Mickey Mouse are getting the adaptation they have been waiting over two decades for. A brand-new original anime series based on the massive video game franchise Kingdom Hearts has officially been greenlit for Disney+.
The announcement came during the D23 fan event, confirming that legendary video game creator Tetsuya Nomura is heavily involved. Nomura is working closely with the creative team at Square Enix and Disney to build a fresh story that expands on the existing universe while keeping the magic that Pinoy fans fell in love with back in the PlayStation 2 era.
A fresh story for Keyblade masters
Instead of a direct beat-for-beat adaptation of the existing games, the series promises an original narrative. It aims to give longtime followers a completely new way to experience the world while introducing the cross-over magic to a new generation of viewers.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, expressed excitement over taking a world that fans have spent years exploring through controllers and translating it to the television screen. Davis stated that the upcoming series will remain unmistakably true to its roots thanks to the tight collaboration with Nomura.
Expanding the local streaming lineup
The upcoming series joins a growing slate of animated content arriving on Disney+ Philippines. It will share the platform with other highly anticipated animated titles like Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens, and Messi and the Giants.
Since its debut in March 2002, the gaming franchise has shipped more than 39 million units worldwide, blending classic Disney whimsy with the deep storytelling of Square Enix role-playing games.
Local release dates and specific Philippine pricing details have not yet been announced.
