A 7.7-magnitude earthquake has torn through eastern Indonesia, killing at least 47 people and sending survivors scrambling into the hills as the sea receded in front of them. The quake struck in the Flores Sea off the northern coast of East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday, and the death toll is still climbing as rescuers dig through the rubble.
A shallow, destructive jolt
The quake hit at a depth of just 10 kilometers, and shallower earthquakes tend to be the most destructive at the surface. The US Geological Survey, which measured the August 14 event at 68 kilometers north of Ende, Indonesia, said roughly 2 million people were exposed to strong (MMI VI) to violent (MMI IX) shaking. Indonesia’s disaster agency, BNPB, reported hundreds of buildings damaged and dozens of aftershocks, including a magnitude 6.4 quake in North Sumatra.
Killed in their sleep
East Nusa Tenggara governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said many of the victims were killed in their sleep when collapsing rubble fell on them. Video from the port in Maumere showed chunks of concrete breaking off a terminal building onto passengers, and some people thrown into the sea when a gangway collapsed onto an inter-island ferry.
Tsunami panic on the coast
At the coastal village of Talibura in Sikka, resident Arnold Welianto told the BBC the “very strong shaking” woke him, and he went straight to his child’s room. Many people had already fled into the hills, and the sea had receded, he said, the classic sign that can precede a tsunami. A tsunami warning was issued but lifted about three hours later when no significant sea level rise was detected. BNPB said about 2,000 people had evacuated or relocated on their own.
Why it matters here
The Philippines sits on the same volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, and the USGS notes this M7.7 sits in a region that saw a 1992 M7.8 quake just 63 kilometers away, one that killed at least 2,500 people. The lesson is the one every temblor reinforces for communities like ours: it is the minutes after the shaking stops that determine whether a disaster stays manageable or becomes a tragedy.
The death toll from the Flores quake is expected to rise as rescuers reach remote areas. The number of injured, displaced, and still missing will become clearer in the coming hours as Indonesia mounts its emergency response.
