BYD’s 900 km Sealion 08 flagship is officially real, and its big PHEV sibling is already heading to the Philippines

BYD's Sealion 08 can do 900 km on a charge, and the bigger PHEV sibling is already on the Philippines' DOE list. Here's what's coming. #BYD #Sealion08 #EV #PHEV

Nine hundred kilometers on a single charge is the number every electric car maker is chasing, and BYD says its new flagship SUV just got there. Meet the Sealion 08, the model that takes the Ocean lineup to a new level, and the real question for Filipino buyers is simpler than the spec sheet: when does a car with this much range actually land here, and what will it cost?

The 900 km story, and the battery that does it

The Sealion 08 reaches that headline figure through sheer battery mass. The Long-Range rear-wheel-drive version packs a 115.072 kWh second-generation Blade LFP pack weighing a hefty 810.5 kilograms, roughly three-tenths of the whole car, and BYD rates it for 900 km on the CLTC test cycle. The entry rear-driver runs a smaller 92.093 kWh pack good for 710 km, while the dual-motor top trim trades range for muscle at 800 km. Here is the full range and powertrain breakdown.

That 900 km figure is a CLTC number, and CLTC is generous. Real-world range will be lower, but the headroom is the point.

The real headline is what the range figure papers over. The same platform rides on an 800-volt architecture with second-gen flash-charging Blade batteries, and the smaller pack can charge from 10 percent to 97 percent in about nine minutes. A car that covers 900 km and recharges that fast does not just beat range anxiety, it ends the argument.

A flagship that is huge in every direction

The Sealion 08 stretches 5,115 mm long with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, a proper three-row-capable family hauler offered in five-seat and six-seat layouts. Underneath sit rear-wheel steering and a DiSus-A chassis with dual-chamber air suspension, while BYD’s DiPilot 5.0 handles assisted driving with Navigate-On-Autopilot on urban roads and highways. Pre-orders opened in China on August 13 starting around 230,000 yuan, with a plug-in hybrid variant joining the lineup.

What is already heading to the Philippines

Here is the twist that makes this more than a China story. The related BYD Sealion 8 DM-p, the three-row plug-in hybrid sibling, has already been added to the Philippines’ Department of Energy list of recognized electric vehicles, a strong sign it is on its way to local showrooms. The DOE listing reveals a big three-row PHEV with a 1.5-liter turbo engine, dual electric motors for all-wheel drive, a 35.6 kWh battery, and a combined range of around 1,200 km, enough to dwarf the Tang DM-i’s figure. The Sealion 8 DM-p is expected to give BYD’s local PHEV lineup a new flagship.

The bottom line for Filipino buyers

The Sealion 08 EV with its 900 km rating is the flagship of the Ocean series, but for the Philippines the more immediate story is the PHEV sibling already green-lit by the DOE. Whether the full-electric 900 km version follows is still unconfirmed, yet the pattern is unmistakable: BYD keeps pushing bigger, longer-range, more loaded SUVs into the market, and the Sealion is the new benchmark. The Sealion 5 already made a splash locally, and now the flagship family is arriving, PHEV first, all-electric later, either way carrying a number that changes what Filipinos expect from a plug-in.
