The BYD Shark 6 has a serious rival coming to Philippine showrooms: the Chery Stockman, the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid pickup, has been confirmed for the local market. United Asia Automotive Group Inc. (UAAGI) chairman Rommel Sytin broke the news, with no official specs or price revealed yet for the PH version.

A 476 PS diesel PHEV with serious towing

At the heart of the Stockman is a 2.5L turbo-diesel engine paired with an electric motor and a high-capacity battery pack, good for a combined 350 kW (476 PS) and 800 Nm of torque. That muscle translates to a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg, comfortably in full-size ute territory.

Chery says the Stockman can cover up to 100 km on battery power alone on the NEDC standard, and total system range is expected to clear 1,000 km once the diesel engine joins in.

Built like a proper off-roader

Unlike most PHEV pickups that ride on monocoque platforms, the Stockman keeps a ladder-frame chassis with high-strength steel construction, double wishbones with coil springs up front, and leaf springs at the rear. A part-time 4WD system with front, center, and rear locking differentials plus all-terrain tires as standard round out the off-road package.

It measures 5,450mm long, 2,010mm wide, and 1,890mm tall on a 3,250mm wheelbase, with a 1,560mm bed and 247mm of ground clearance.

Why the diesel PHEV matters

The Stockman is being positioned directly against the electrified pickup wave we have been tracking in the PH market. A diesel-electric plug-in is an unusual combo: it keeps diesel’s towing and range strengths while adding electric-only running for city use, a formula no other pickup currently offers locally. The GAC MPV family has already shown how fast PHEVs are entering the market, and PHEV options are multiplying across price bands.

Chery Philippines has not confirmed pricing, variants, or a launch window yet. For reference, the local Chery lineup’s electrified rEV models sit around the PHP 1.5 million mark, and the best car under PHP 1.5 million in 2026 has become a crowded field. Watch this space for local specs and SRP.
