The field: ten cars, four powertrains
We pulled every mainstream nameplate that lands inside PHP 1 to 1.5 million at SRP, then added the promo prices that change the math. The list deliberately mixes body types and fuel types so the comparison is apples to apples on price, not on category.

Power and torque: where the electrics pull ahead
On paper, electrified cars dominate. The BYD Sealion 6 PHEV makes 217 hp and 325 Nm, the Omoda E5 and VinFast VF6 both make 201 hp, and even the humble BYD Dolphin out torques most gas crossovers. Among pure gasoline cars, the Chery Tiggo 5X Pro leads on paper with 147 hp, but real world feel favors the instant shove of any EV or hybrid.
Cost of ownership: the real test
We modeled five years and 75,000 km (15,000 km a year) for each car. Running cost covers energy (gas at PHP 58/L, home charging at roughly PHP 1.50/km), maintenance, insurance at 2 percent of value, registration, and the VinFast battery subscription where it applies. Depreciation uses brand adjusted rates: Toyotas and Hondas hold value best, Chinese EVs and PHEVs fall fastest. Lower is better.

Our recommendations
Best all rounder on cost: JAC Ytterby. It posts the lowest five year total at PHP 931,750, or PHP 12.42 per kilometer, because its cheap purchase price and near zero running cost outweigh steep depreciation. If you have home or office charging, it is the cheapest way to commute in this bracket.
Best balanced buy: Toyota Raize Turbo. It pairs the second lowest total cost (PHP 13.76/km) with the best resale of the group and Toyota’s service network. The Raize is the safe, liquid choice if you might sell in three years.

Best for families: Honda BR-V. The only seven seater here under PHP 1.5 million, with Honda Sensing driver aids. You pay more per kilometer (PHP 15.79) but get two extra seats and the strongest brand resale after Toyota.
Best power and flexibility: BYD Sealion 6 DM-i. The 217 hp PHEV does 88 km on electricity alone then 1,000+ km total, so most city weeks are gas free and long trips need no charger. Check BYD’s spec sheet; just brace for the heaviest depreciation.
The takeaway
There is no single winner because the bracket now serves different needs. Want the lowest cost per kilometer and you can charge: take the JAC Ytterby or BYD Dolphin. Want the safest resale and simplest ownership: the Toyota Raize. Want hybrid efficiency with zero charging hassle: the Nissan Kicks e-POWER on promo. Want seven seats: the Honda BR-V. Want the most car for the peso in raw performance: the BYD Sealion 6. Promo pricing in 2026 has made the electrified options genuinely competitive, so the old rule of “just buy a gasoline Toyota” no longer holds by default.
