Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially displaced James Cameron’s Titanic as the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, passing the 1997 classic on Friday, August 28, 2026 in its fourth weekend of release (per Bing News aggregations of Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Forbes, and Cosmic Book News coverage).

Per Variety (Aug 16), the Tom Holland-starrer crossed $2 billion worldwide by August 16, joining an exclusive club of eight films in history to reach that mark, and ended its fourth weekend (Aug 21 to 23) at approximately $854.9 million domestically and $2.22 billion globally, sitting just $3.4 million shy of passing Avengers: Endgame for the all-time number-two spot (per Cosmic Book News, Aug 23). Forbes (Aug 24) framed the next milestone bluntly: “Spider-Man To Pass Titanic And Ne Zha 2 As 4th-Biggest Film Ever,” predicting the leap past Cameron’s long-standing $2.257 billion benchmark and China’s 2025 animated champion Ne Zha 2 within days, and per Bing News, Brand New Day made good on that forecast on August 28.

The new all-time top six now reads:

Rank Title Worldwide gross Year
1 Avatar ~$2.92 billion 2009
2 Avengers: Endgame ~$2.80 billion 2019
3 Avatar: The Way of Water ~$2.33 billion 2022
4 Spider-Man: Brand New Day $2.24 billion and counting 2026
5 Titanic $2.26 billion 1997
6 Ne Zha 2 ~$2.22 billion 2025

The Russo Brothers – who directed the second-place Avengers: Endgame – personally handed the baton to Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton and stars Tom Holland and Zendaya on Instagram after the film broke their U.S. opening weekend record. “The gauntlet has been passed,” they wrote, alongside an image of Spider-Man wearing victory rings resembling the Infinity Gauntlet.

Brand New Day opened to a record-shattering $360 million domestically over the August 1 weekend, narrowly topping Endgame’s 2019 launch ($357M) and making it and Endgame the only two films in history to debut above $300 million in North America. The global launch landed at $927 million (per Hollywood Reporter) to $932 million (per Variety), the biggest worldwide debut until Endgame’s $1.2 billion global opening in 2019.

The film then cleared $1 billion worldwide in just six days, becoming the second-fastest film in history to reach that benchmark – only Endgame, which did it during its three-day opening weekend, got there faster. It followed that by crossing $2 billion globally in three weeks, the second-fastest climb to that mark after Endgame’s 11-day run.

The cast – directed by Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Rachel O’Connor – features Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink, Florence Pugh, Michael B. Jordan, and Marisa Tomei.

With Endgame now only a few million ahead at #2 and Force Awakens‘s all-time North American record of $936 million still standing, box-office watchers are asking whether Brand New Day could become the first film ever to cross $1 billion domestically – and whether it has any shot at the $3 billion mark. The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is now rewriting the all-time leaderboard in real time.
