Anthropic’s developer account is taking heat online for calling a real 17 percent cut to Claude Code’s weekly usage limits a “permanent 25 percent increase,” after the company’s official announcement on X left out the comparison heavy Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users actually care about.
Per the original three-tweet thread from @ClaudeDevs on August 29 (archived via UnrollNow), Anthropic announced: “Starting September 14, we’re permanently raising standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. Until then, the current 50% increase will be in place.” The first tweet never mentioned that the new “permanent” level is, in fact, lower than what subscribers have had since May 13, when Anthropic rolled out a temporary 50 percent boost that it then extended four separate times over the summer.
Do the math: if your original weekly allowance was 100 units, the May promo gave you 150. On September 14, the new “permanent” level gives you 125. That is genuinely 25 percent more than the original baseline, but also 17 percent less than what users have been using every week for the past four months.
Anthropic admitted the cut only in a follow-up tweet, buried in the same thread: “Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code. We’re working on exciting changes that will make it feel like you’re getting more from Claude, while having more visibility and control of your usage. Can’t wait to share them.” A third tweet closed with: “Thanks for hanging with us while we figured out what we can sustainably serve going forward. Let us know what you build this weekend!”
Backlash: deleted thread, community notes, and a Hacker News pile-on
Developers did not need long to do the subtraction. Per Notebookcheck, “users quickly did the math themselves to find the catch,” and “prompting users to attach a Community Note directly to the main announcement to clearly warn others about the impending downgrade.” BleepingComputer reported that “Anthropic later deleted the original thread and posted a clarification” (the three-tweet version now live is the clarified one, per Wayback and UnrollNow captures).
On Hacker News, the post titled “Claude Code is going reduce limits by 25% from September 14” drew the response: “what kind of bullshit speak is the original announcement or do they think devs can’t elementary school math?” Another commenter calculated the cut in plain terms: “I’m pretty sure they mean going from 150% to 125%, where 1.25/1.50 = 0.83, so they’re calling that a 17% reduction. It’s less than today, but also more than a limit they made up and then didn’t apply.” A third pushed back on Anthropic’s framing, arguing “they are both raising the limits.”
The Decoder framed the change as a “raise on paper but a cut in practice,” noting the move comes “just days after rival OpenAI similarly clamped down on developers by restoring a strict five-hour limit on its own Codex and Work tools” for ChatGPT Plus users. StartupFortune argued the framing is the story: “Anthropic isn’t lying: 125 really is 25% more than 100. But nobody who spent four months building coding habits around 150 units a week is going to read ‘25% increase’ and feel looked after.”
Anthropic, for its part, says the move is about long-term sustainability, and that more “visibility and control” tooling is on the way. The company did not address the deletion of the original thread, the Community Notes, or the developer math in any of the three tweets that remain live as of publication.
