Beth Greene is alive in The Walking Dead again, 11 years after her death left the fandom reeling, and the reunion Maggie fans never thought they would get is finally here.
Note: light spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3, episode 6, which aired Sunday, Aug. 30.
Beth returns in a what-if episode
The Sunday, Aug. 30 episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City imagines a world where the zombie apocalypse never happened. In that alternate reality, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) never lived through the horror, and Beth (Emily Kinney) survived. She is an aspiring singer living in New York City, and Maggie visits from the family farm in Georgia to watch her perform.
Beth was killed off the flagship series back in season five, shot by former cop Dawn Lerner during a confrontation at Grady Memorial Hospital. The appearance marks Emily Kinney’s first time playing the character since that on-screen death.
A Central Park hug 11 years in the making
When Beth died on the original show, it happened moments before Maggie could reach her missing sister. So when the two finally meet up at Central Park and embrace in Dead City, it is a hug more than 11 years in the making.
Kinney told People that the embrace was a hug that never got to happen for the characters. Cohan said the episode lets both the characters and the audience find some closure for Beth after all these years, noting you never really see them get the chance to grieve.
Emily Kinney brings the music back
Kinney, a singer-songwriter in real life, returns with a guitar case on her back and an original song to match. She pitched her own track, “Reasons to Stay Alive,” to showrunner Seth Hoffman and composer Ian Hultquist, and it plays as Beth finally gets to sing in the episode’s closing stretch.
A reunion the franchise needed
Kinney first revealed the return alongside Cohan at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, two days before Dead City‘s third season premiered on AMC and AMC+.
The what-if format is a first for the franchise, and it keeps the Walking Dead universe alive through streaming-era revivals and spinoffs. For Filipino fans who followed Maggie and Beth from the early seasons, the moment lands the way a long-awaited on-screen reunion always should.
