The ocean at the heart of El Nino is running up to 2.6 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, and the United Nations says this “supersized” El Nino is only getting stronger. The odds of it persisting into 2027 are nearly 100 percent, its most unequivocal forecast in 50 years.
What the UN is warning about
Forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization’s global producing centres now expect El Nino to strengthen into a “very strong” event before peaking toward the end of the year, with climate impacts continuing well into 2027. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres put it bluntly: “El Nino is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up.”
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned the event could deliver a “massive blow” to communities and economies, and said the agency was launching its biggest weather-service mobilization yet to prepare. The combination of an already record-hot ocean and a strong El Nino has analysts warning that 2027 could become the hottest year ever recorded.

Beneath the surface, an enormous reservoir of unusually warm water is still feeding the event months ahead of its expected peak. El Nino is a natural climate cycle, but a hotter baseline ocean can amplify the extreme heat, drought and floods it delivers.
What it means for the Philippines
For the Philippines, the local outlook has been firming all year. PAGASA’s own forecast, covered earlier on ASTIG, sees an 81 percent chance of a very strong El Nino between October 2026 and January 2027, with drought or dry spells already possible across Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.
The impacts are already showing up on farms. In Valencia City, Bukidnon, about 80 percent of 300 hectares of rainfed rice fields have struggled to reach the reproductive stage because of a severe lack of water, forcing the National Irrigation Administration to schedule deliveries. Corn ears have come in smaller and ginger gardens are drying up, local agriculture officers reported on September 3.
Expect the effects to widen as the event peaks: below-normal rainfall through the dry season, stress on water supplies that the monsoon has been swelling lately, and pressure on food prices from farm losses. Officials are urging water conservation and drought mitigation to start now rather than react once the dry spell bites.
