What the approval changes

The US FDA approved Mounjaro to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, defined as cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack, or non-fatal stroke, in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk. It is a dual GIP and GLP-1 hormone receptor agonist from Eli Lilly. Mounjaro was already approved to improve blood sugar in adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes.

In the United States, the most prescribed branded diabetes medicine for adults, and Lilly says the new indication builds on its track record in both blood sugar control and weight.

Why the heart data matters

The approval rests on the SURPASS-CVOT trial, the first cardiovascular outcomes study to compare two incretin medicines head to head rather than against a placebo. It enrolled more than 13,000 participants across 30 countries over more than four and a half years. In the trial, Mounjaro showed an 8 percent lower rate of cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke compared with Trulicity (dulaglutide), a GLP-1 medicine with established heart benefit.

What it means in the Philippines

Mounjaro is not new to the Philippine market. marketed locally and exclusively by Zuellig Pharma, and it has been available in Philippine drugstores since late 2025. Because it is prescription-only, patients need a doctor’s clearance before using it.
