Survivors, you will not have to wait until 2027 to set foot in Trumbull Valley again. Undead Labs has confirmed that State of Decay 3 is getting closed beta playtests before the end of 2026, the biggest hands-on window yet ahead of the game’s launch next year.
Closed beta before 2026 ends
In the official announcement on stateofdecay.com, the studio confirmed closed beta playtests are on the way before the end of 2026. Sign-ups are already open, and community members can register now at playtest.stateofdecay.com. If you already signed up during the alpha period, you are still on the list.
This builds on a playtesting program that kicked off in April 2026, when the first alpha wave went out. That round was intentionally small, but it gave the team its first real read on combat against multiple freaks, the world’s lighting and weather, and character customization.
Biggest map ever, untethered multiplayer
The beta is not just a bigger test group. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt described State of Decay 3 as “our largest map ever” with untethered multiplayer, which is exactly why the studio needs these playtests to stress-test and fine-tune the systems. The permadeath mechanics and co-op combat encounters are being balanced off real community feedback.

The Xbox split
The beta news lands during a turbulent stretch for Undead Labs, which is splitting away from Xbox as part of the platform’s restructuring and summer layoffs. The announcement still lists State of Decay 3 for a Game Pass release, though reports suggest the studio may not be obligated to bring it to the subscription service once it leaves Xbox.
State of Decay 3 is the latest big open-world survival title to watch on the upcoming Xbox hardware, joining an already crowded 2027 calendar. It joins the likes of GTA 6 as a game fans will be able to play well before its full launch.
