MANILA, Philippines (Jul 2026) — Getting a quality education in the most remote corners of the Philippines is becoming easier as traditional classrooms trade basic pen and paper for digital tools. Through the #KonektedforLearning initiative by PLDT and Smart, underserved communities are gaining access to modern technology and crisis-tested teaching strategies.
This shift away from old-school learning methods aims to help shape a more inclusive and technology-enabled future for education nationwide.
A classroom packed inside a bag
One of the major efforts under the program is the School-in-a-Bag project, which delivers a portable digital classroom to areas that lack proper infrastructure. Each kit contains a laptop for the teacher, 10 tablets loaded with interactive educational apps and materials from the Department of Education, a pocket Wi-Fi device, and extra storage.
So far, 784 of these digital classroom packages have been deployed across the country, reaching nearly 120,000 Pinoy students. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, or UNICEF, has also pitched in by committing more than 300 units for schools in hard-to-reach areas.
Keeping classes going through disasters
Natural disasters, severe weather, and local conflicts frequently disrupt classes across the archipelago. To keep students learning even during crises, the program supports a specialized teaching strategy called the Central Visayan Institute Dynamic Learning Program.
Created by Ramon Magsaysay awardees Christopher Bernido and the late Marivic Carpio-Bernido, this strategy focuses on independent learning. Students use single-page guides to tackle tough lessons on their own, requiring very little teacher intervention. This method also helps solve teacher shortages by allowing one expert educator to manage three classes at the same time. The strategy has already trained around 33,000 teachers.
Prepping students and teachers for the future
The initiative is also preparing the Pinoy youth for an increasingly digital world. Through the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program, which started in 2003, students dive into advanced topics like automation and intelligent systems to build industry-ready skills. The program has trained more than 53,000 teachers and students on modern communication solutions.
Teachers are also getting their own tech training. A specialized boot camp helps educators use artificial intelligence to build lesson plans, design custom classroom activities, and automate everyday administrative tasks. More than 800 teachers have completed the training so far, ensuring educators are just as ready for the tech shift as their students.
