QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Jul 2026) – Monitoring the air we breathe just got a lot tougher and more practical, thanks to a new device that inspects pollution the way a scientist looks at cells. The Robust Optical Aerosol Monitor, known as ROAM, is the first Pinoy-made air quality monitoring device designed to withstand heavy pollution without constantly breaking down.
The device functions essentially as an air microscope, counting individual particles in the air instead of biological cells. Developed by Len Herald Lim from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Science’s Institute of Chemistry alongside engineer Paul Alexander Darvin from the University of the Philippines Los Banos, the technology started as a basic measurement concept back in 2014. Unlike standard industrial monitors, this device does not rely on complex, microscopic parts that easily clog.
Built to survive the dust
The real test for the device came during its initial long-term deployment in Cauayan, Isabela, where a unit was placed in a highly dusty environment for about six to eight months. While standard commercial monitors used by environmental agencies require frequent maintenance in heavily polluted areas, the Pinoy-made monitor kept running. Even when the outer shell returned covered in dirt, the internal components remained fully functional because the design uses a wide microscope field rather than a restrictive pinhole.
A separate field test in South Cotabato yielded similar results, where another unit operated without any human intervention for nearly six months. This high saturation limit allows it to handle extreme pollution levels that would easily disable conventional equipment.
An affordable solution for local communities
In addition to its durability, the device is highly economical to maintain, making repairs inexpensive compared to commercial alternatives. This combination of reliability and low cost has made local government units the primary adopters of the technology.
The project was showcased during the sixth Innovation Impact Stories webinar, an initiative by the university to highlight how scientific research can transition from academic theory into practical, real-world tools.
