An era ended in Philadelphia on Saturday night when a retiring MMA legend laid his gloves in the center of the Octagon, and the UFC 330 card that carried it also saw a champion chase history. Edson Barboza’s 16-year UFC career ended with a grueling loss, while Islam Makhachev put his welterweight belt on the line against Ian Machado Garry in the main event.

Barboza hangs up his gloves

The moment fans will remember from UFC 330 came early. Esteban Ribovics defeated Edson Barboza by TKO (strikes) at 1:32 of Round 2, battering the Brazilian veteran from the opening bell. Ribovics crowded Barboza out of his striking range, stuck him with a steady diet of punches, and left him with a gnarly wound on his right shin by the end of the first round.

The Argentinian never let up, forcing the stoppage without putting Barboza on the canvas. It was the biggest win of Ribovics’ career. And then came the moment that stopped the night: Barboza took off his gloves, laid them in the center of the cage, and brought a halt to a 16-year UFC career remembered for highlight-reel finishes and a brutal strength of schedule.

Makhachev chases history

The main event had its own stakes. Welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world, put his title on the line against Ian Machado Garry, looking to surpass Anderson Silva’s record for the longest winning streak in UFC history by earning his 17th consecutive victory. Garry, the number one contender, entered at 17-1 fighting out of Dublin by way of Brazil.

It was a card with two titles on the line at Xfinity Mobile Arena, with strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern defending her belt against Gillian Robertson in the co-main event. The UFC 330 lineup delivered a night of finishes, retirements, and a champion chasing immortality.
