Picture this: it is your turn at the counter, the MG salesman slides the price tag across, and you read P 1,448,888.
You blink. You look at the spec sheet. You look at the price tag again.
That is roughly the scene playing out at the Trinoma Activity Center today, August 27, 2026, because MG Motor Philippines just officially launched the MG S5 EV.
CarGuide.PH broke down the specs the same day; the launch event kicks off the brand’s nationwide MG New Energy Tour 2026 roadshow.
Let us walk through what you are actually getting for the money.
It is rear-wheel drive. In 2026. For under P 1.5M.
Yes, you read that right. The MG S5 EV is a compact crossover SUV with a single rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor pushing 170 PS and 250 Nm to the back wheels.
Not a front-wheel-drive commuter pretending to be fun. The actual rear-wheel-drive layout your uncle still swears is the only way a car should drive.
It is the same architecture the non-Urban MG4 uses, and the S5 EV shares the rear-motor, RWD party trick.
Drive modes include Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow, and Custom. Regenerative braking has four levels, plus adaptive regen, plus one-pedal drive. You can drive this thing like a slightly tall sports sedan, if that is the vibe you are going for.
The range is real, but you have to read the fine print
The 49 kWh CATL-SAIC LFP battery is officially rated at 415 km on the NEDC cycle, or 340 km on the more honest WLTP cycle. Both numbers are listed on the PH spec sheet, which is actually a good sign. Brands that hide WLTP usually have something to hide.
In the real world of Manila traffic, EDSA heat, and a fully loaded family trip to Tagaytay, expect somewhere in between.
Day-to-day, that is enough to skip charging for a full work week. Weekend out of town? You will want a plan.
The car supports 6.6 kW AC charging (about 8.5 hours for a full top-up at home) and 120 kW DC fast charging, which takes the battery from 20% to 80% in 24 minutes.
That is a coffee stop, not a lunch stop.
It also has V2L. Yes, you can power your home appliances, your tent setup, or your sari-sari store fridge from the car. We see you, content creators.
It is the cheapest of the bunch, but not by a lot
Here is where the price gets interesting. The S5 EV lands at P 1,448,888 SRP, with an introductory price of P 1,408,888. Now look at who it has to fight in the PH compact EV SUV arena:
- GAC Aion V at P 1,498,000
- BYD Atto 3 at P 1,638,000
- Dongfeng Vigo EV at P 1,458,000
Read that again. The MG is P 9,112 cheaper than the cheapest direct rival at SRP, and P 189,112 cheaper than the most expensive one. The introductory price undercuts the Aion V by almost P 90,000.
That is a real number. That is a real decision.
The catch: the S5 EV is the only one in this segment with a single, unnamed variant on offer. No Lux, no Long Range, no Performance.
Just one spec. You want the 49 kWh LFP, you take the 49 kWh LFP.
The inside is where MG quietly got serious
Step in, and the S5 EV feels less like a value play and more like a real MG.
A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster pairs with a 12.8-inch floating touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.
The gear selector is a rotary knob on the center console.
The seats are fabric, not leatherette, but the driver’s seat is 6-way manually adjustable, the front passenger is 4-way, and the rear seat splits 60/40 with adjustable headrests.
There is a tonneau cover. There is even a wireless charging pad on some trims.
It is not a luxury car. It is a well-equipped, well-finished compact SUV that does not feel like the cheap seat at the buffet.
The ADAS suite is the real headline
The MG Pilot ADAS package on the S5 EV includes:
- Front Collision Warning
- Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
- Intelligent Headlight Control
- Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping Assist
- Lane Change Assist
- Blind Spot Detection
- Door Open Warning
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Braking
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Traffic Jam Assist
- Intelligent Speed Assistance
- Driver Monitoring System
- 7 SRS airbags
- Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control
- Tire Pressure Monitoring
For a sub-P 1.5M EV in 2026, that is a properly complete safety suite.
Most rivals at this price still gate ACC, AEB, or blind-spot behind higher trims. MG just included all of it.
The warranty is the part nobody talks about enough
The S5 EV comes with:
- 7-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty
- 8-year unlimited mileage battery warranty
- 5 years of roadside assistance
Read that battery warranty. Eight years. Unlimited mileage.
That is the kind of peace of mind that quietly turns “I am thinking about an EV” into “I am thinking about an MG EV.” It also signals MG is confident in the LFP chemistry, and LFP is the right call for the Philippines (heat, longevity, cheaper to replace if you ever have to).
So. Should you actually ditch gas?
Let us run the math you are already running. If you drive 40 km a day around Metro Manila, you charge at home on a 6.6 kW wall box, and electricity runs you roughly P 12 to P 14 per kWh, your daily “fuel” cost is somewhere between P 350 and P 450.
According to ASTIG.PH’s own EV vs gasoline comparison, a comparable gasoline SUV burns about P 600 to P 800 a day in the same grind. Over a year, that is a savings of P 90,000 to P 130,000.
The S5 EV pays back the difference between itself and a base RAV4 or CR-V gasoline in roughly three to four years on fuel savings alone. After that, every kilometer is basically free.
The MG S5 EV is not perfect. The single-variant strategy means no big-battery long-range option for the Manila-to-Tacloban types. The 340 km WLTP range will get you to Baguio and back, but only just.
And yes, the charging infrastructure outside the major cities is still a work in progress, which is exactly why MG is rolling out the New Energy Tour 2026, hitting the provinces to let people actually drive these things before deciding.
But at P 1,408,888 introductory, with a 7-year warranty, an 8-year battery warranty, 5 years of roadside assistance, RWD, and a full ADAS suite? That is not a “wait and see” price. That is a “park the test drive and start the bank transfer” price.
You came in here to find out how much you would pay. The answer is P 1,408,888 to P 1,448,888, depending on whether you catch the introductory promo.
Now you know. The rest is up to you, your garage, and whether your home electrician can install a 7 kW wall box before the weekend.
Buddy. The future just got a lot more affordable. We see you, MG.
