OpenAI’s advertising business has quietly crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, roughly 200 days after it started testing ads inside ChatGPT. Here is what the milestone means for the AI company and its road to an IPO.

Ads inside ChatGPT are now a real business

OpenAI said on Monday that its ad business has hit $1 billion in annualized revenue, a figure it is holding up as validation of its diversification strategy. The roughly 200-day-old unit now sits alongside the company’s enterprise contracts, consumer subscriptions and usage-based APIs.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US in February. Since then, ChatGPT Ads have rolled out to more than 40 countries, and the company opened its self-serve ad platform on Monday to marketers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

ChatGPT Ads at a glance

Metric Figure
Annualized revenue run rate $1 billion
Age of the ad business About 200 days
Countries live 40+
Where ads appear Free tier and Go plan
Weekly active ChatGPT users Roughly 1 billion
Reported company valuation $852 billion

What ads look like in ChatGPT

  • Ads appear for users on the free tier and the Go subscription plan.
  • OpenAI says the ads are clearly labeled and do not influence how ChatGPT answers.
  • Advertisers cannot see users’ private conversations.
  • The free tier and Go make up the vast majority of ChatGPT’s roughly 1 billion weekly active users.

Why the ad push matters

The company is under pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation to investors ahead of an expected initial public offering. Advertising has long been the cash cow for rivals like Google and Meta, and OpenAI is now leaning on it as part of a “diversified business model.”

The move drew an early jab from rival Anthropic, which centered its first Super Bowl campaign on mocking OpenAI’s entry into advertising.

What it means for Philippine users

For Filipino ChatGPT users on the free tier, this means ads may appear in the chatbot as the company expands its ad product to more markets this year. The broader AI picture is more complicated, and we broke down whether the AI bubble is cracking. On the rival side, Anthropic has been reshaping its own product around the same AI boom.
