UP SPECA’s Speech Cup 2017 On Fate and The Fake

#ChangeIsComing, #ChangeWeNeed, #ChangeChangeChange — Who are the prime movers of ‘change?’

This February 18, sixteen high schools from all over the Philippines will come together at the Cine Adarna, UPFI Film Center, UP Diliman to compete for the University of the Philippines Speech Communication’s (UP SPECA) annual Oral Interpretation and Speech Choir competition. Speech Cup 2017 : “Badhi: Kung Hindi Tayo Sino?” centers on the Filipino concept of “kapalaran.”

‘Badhi’ is a Filipino word that refers to the lines of the palm that represents one’s fate.

At this day and age where information — both real and fake — is available “at the palm of our hands,” the youth plays a vital role in shaping society; even more, the future. Rather than rely on fate, false prodigies, or messianic figures, Speech Cup 2017 advocates for the expression of the youth’s own ideas. The platform, however, is different than their usual social media. Through the power of speech and performance art, these students will show just how they can be the change this country needs.

This is consistent with UP SPECA’s mission of academic and holistic formation. For 15 years, the organization continues to spread the power of speech through active participation in socio-civic activities within and beyond their University.

Tickets for Speech Cup 2017 : “Badhi: Kung Hindi Tayo Sino?” is priced at PHP 250 (PHP 200 for UP students).
