BEA Heroes “Hope in Motion” [event]

BEA Heroes is an outreach program that collaborates with beneficiaries and provides them with aid. This project is executed by college students of the Business Economics Association (BEA) in the University of Asia and the Pacific.

This year, BEA Heroes will be organizing a monetary donation drive from November 13 to December 20 for Luwalhati ng Maynila, a home for the aged, to alleviate the effects of COVID-19 and Typhoon Ulysses. All of the monetary donations from donors and sponsors will be given to the beneficiary. This year’s theme is “Hope in Motion” as the program aspires to instill hope and sympathy this Christmas. We will do this by providing the elderly residents of Luwalhati ng Maynila with the money for their urgent necessities, specifically, disposable masks, cloth masks, bath soaps, bar soaps, detergent, and roof repair.

Luwalhati ng Maynila, the beneficiary of BEA Heroes 2020, is a home for the aged found inside the Manila Boystown Complex in Barangay Parang, Marikina City. It is one of the few remaining elderly care institutions in Metro Manila that is home to people aged 60 and above. It was established on July 25, 1967, by the late Manila Mayor Valeriano Fugoso to address the increasing number of abandoned and homeless elderly in the city. It currently houses a population of 395 elderly people.

The main goal of the institution is to improve the quality of life of these lolos and lolas and to provide them with a new home. Due to the pandemic, the institution has implemented a total lockdown of the place to safeguard the health of the lolos and lolas. As a result, Luwalhati ng Maynila faced a decrease in donations from the benefactors. Due to the Massive Rescue happening in Manila, the ratio between the houseparent to the elderly has increased from 1:3 to 1:6 which is double their usual capacity. Aside from the difficulties encountered by the institution per se, the pandemic also impacted the lolos and lolas with the decrease of social interactions which they used to have almost every week. With this, they feel more lonely given the limited interaction with just the houseparents and staff.

Furthermore, since Luwalhati ng Maynila is located in Marikina City, they have been badly hit by Typhoon Ulysses. The strong wind and rain greatly destroyed their roof, allowing water to enter through the ceiling and flood the floor. Because of the occurrence of the typhoon in this time of the pandemic, they are now in dire need of donations. Through this project, we want to improve the conditions of our elderly at Luwalhati ng Maynila by knocking at your generous hearts for donations.

If you wish to donate, you may do so through the accounts placed below. Once done, kindly send your proof of payment to the Business Economics Association Facebook page (@BEA.UAP). Thank you for your generosity!
