Kai Sotto’s NBA dream just gained a powerful new backer. Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone has offered to recommend the 7-foot-3 center to the Miami Heat, though at least one NBA agent is telling the Filipino big man to keep expectations realistic.
Tim Cone says he will pick up the phone
Right after Gilas Pilipinas’ 68-56 win over Iran in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Cone told Sotto he would reach out to his contacts in the Miami organization. “I still think you can get into the league,” the American coach said, per the Daily Tribune. “I’ll find a way. I’ll talk to Miami. I’ll see what I can do.”
Cone has genuine Heat ties: he joined the organization as a guest assistant coach during the 2022 NBA Summer League and is close friends with Miami coach Erik Spoelstra.
The odds are not exactly on his side
An NBA agent described the Miami scenario as “unrealistic” to sports informant Homer Sayson, pointing out that the Heat already have 15 players on guaranteed contracts. At center, Miami has Bam Adebayo, Bobby Portis, Nick Richards and Vladislav Goldin.
The paths Sotto can actually take
Sotto is currently a free agent after his contract with the Koshigaya Alphas in the Japan B.League expired. He is weighing a return to the United States, either to a Division I college program or another NBA Summer League run, according to reports.
| Path | What it means | Realism |
|---|---|---|
| Miami two-way or Exhibit 10 | Non-guaranteed, with a route to the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G League | Low, per the agent |
| Return to the Japan B.League | Established, financially stable overseas career | High |
| US NCAA Division I | Back to school and the college route | Medium |
The bigger picture for Philippine basketball
If Sotto ever makes it, he would become the first homegrown Filipino to play in the NBA. The push follows a big qualifying window, where Gilas swept their matches behind a dominant win over Iran, after Sotto returned to the national team fold for the crucial two-game home stand.
