Something got between players and their game libraries on Wednesday: a fresh Xbox outage that Microsoft has confirmed is blocking sign-ins. If you hit an error the moment you tried to log in today, your console is probably fine, it is the Xbox network that is struggling. Error 0x80004005 is the name of the blocker this time around.
What is happening
Xbox Support says it is aware of the problem. Microsoft has confirmed a major outage affecting account and profile services, which means many players cannot sign in to their profile, and some who were already signed in have been disconnected mid-session. Features that require sign-in, which covers most games, apps and social activity on the platform, are unavailable until the fix lands. The company has named no cause and given no restoration time so far.
The error surfaced widely across the player base. Reports on Downdetector spiked to roughly 600 around mid-day against a normal baseline of about three, with sign-in and stalled downloads making up most of the complaints. Error 0x80004005 is a generic Xbox sign-in failure, so it does not tell you much on its own beyond “the service could not let you in”.
Which platforms are hit
This is not limited to one console. The outage is affecting Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Windows PC, mobile and cloud gaming, according to reports. Microsoft has also listed Minecraft as affected, which widens the blast radius well beyond the usual Xbox crowd. The common thread is the account sign-in wall every session passes through, so even a downloaded single-player title can stop at the license check.
2026 has already been rough for Xbox
Wednesday is the platform’s third major sign-in outage of the year, and the pattern is getting hard to ignore:
- February 2026: sign-in and game-save sync issues, with Downdetector reports spiking past 2,200 before partially clearing within about an hour.
- Late July 2026: a roughly 15-hour outage knocked out sign-ins, game launches, the store and Game Pass access. Microsoft later blamed a bad update to an underlying service tied to Home Console sharing and Game Pass content.
- September 2, 2026: today’s incident, with sign-in, profile creation, games, apps and social features all affected.
That July disruption was described as one of the worst of this console generation, so back-to-back authentication failures this close together are raising questions about whether the earlier fix only patched a symptom. The two incidents happened only weeks apart.
What players can actually do
The honest advice for a server-side problem is short: little local tweaking will help. If you are locked out, restart the console or PC and try signing back in, then watch the official Xbox status page for updates. Do not bother deleting games or factory-resetting the console, and do not keep retrying a profile creation against a failing service, since repeated attempts can compound the error. When Microsoft does restore service, a simple sign-in is usually all it takes.
Outages like this also tend to hit at awkward times for players tracking their library. If you are deciding what to keep installed, our rundown of the 10 games leaving Xbox Game Pass this September is worth a read, and a reminder that Xbox has been pushing players toward digital copies with its disc-to-digital program, which makes account access more important than ever.
This is developing coverage of a live service incident. Microsoft has not confirmed a resolution time; status updates will come from the official Xbox status page.
