Green GSM earns sustainability nod just weeks Philippine debut

MANILA, Philippines (Jun 2025) – A Vietnamese electric ride-hailing company that launched in Metro Manila just weeks ago has earned international recognition for its environmental leadership, signaling a potential shift in how Filipinos move around their cities.

Green GSM, Southeast Asia’s first all-electric ride-hailing platform, took home the Green Leadership award at the Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards 2025 in Bangkok on June 28. The recognition comes less than three weeks after the company officially launched its operations in Metro Manila on June 10.

The award celebrates Green GSM’s role in creating sustainable transportation across Southeast Asia, including its recent expansion into the Philippines. The company operates exclusively with electric vehicles, promising zero-emission rides to Filipino commuters in a market traditionally dominated by gasoline-powered vehicles.

“Sustainability at Green GSM goes beyond strategy. It is deeply embedded in our everyday decisions, our culture, and how we grow,” said Phan Thi Hong Dung, Director of Training and Culture Development at parent company Green and Smart Mobility Joint Stock Company, during the Bangkok ceremony.

The Vietnamese company has moved quickly across the region since expanding beyond its home market. In two years, Green GSM has entered Laos, Indonesia, and the Philippines, completing over 300 million trips and covering 1.7 billion zero-emission kilometers. The company estimates it has prevented over 211,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to what 3,200 hectares of forest would absorb annually.

Green GSM’s model combines three approaches to electric mobility. The company runs its own fleet of electric vehicles while offering a technology platform called Xanh SM that allows individual VinFast electric vehicle owners to join the service. It also partners with traditional taxi operators to help them transition to electric fleets, though this feature is not yet available in the Philippines.

The timing of the award coincides with growing interest in sustainable transportation options in the Philippines, where traffic congestion and air pollution remain persistent urban challenges. Green GSM’s entry into Metro Manila represents the first major all-electric ride-hailing service in the country.

Back in Vietnam, Green GSM has captured nearly 40 percent of the electric taxi market and partnered with almost 100 local transport businesses on electrification efforts. Major Vietnamese taxi companies including G7 Taxi, Mai Linh, Lado Taxi, and En Vang have joined the platform, with 19 companies fully converting their fleets to electric vehicles.

The Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards, founded in 2011 by Enterprise Asia, ranks among Asia’s most respected corporate sustainability recognitions. This year’s theme, “A Necessary Shift to a Regenerative Economy,” emphasizes business responsibility in restoring ecosystems and delivering sustainable value to communities.

Green GSM now operates across four Southeast Asian countries and claims to be the region’s second-largest ride-hailing brand and the only one powered entirely by electric vehicles. The company’s rapid regional expansion demonstrates its ability to adapt to diverse markets with varying infrastructure and user behaviors.

For Filipino commuters interested in zero-emission transportation, Green GSM’s electric fleet offers an alternative to traditional gasoline-powered ride-hailing services. The company’s technology platform allows users to book rides through digital applications, similar to other ride-hailing services but with the promise of environmental benefits.

The award recognition positions Green GSM as a potential catalyst for broader adoption of electric vehicles in Philippine transportation, as the country seeks solutions to urban mobility challenges while addressing climate change commitments.
