PASIG, Philippines (Jul 2026) — Digital fraud is getting more sophisticated, but your mobile network is getting even smarter at spotting when a login doesn’t match where you actually are. This is the logic behind a new security tool that helps banks and online shops verify if a customer is truly where they claim to be.
Smart Communications recently secured a global certification from the GSMA for its RoamStatus API. This technology allows businesses to instantly check if a mobile device is roaming domestically or abroad. Unlike traditional methods that might track exact GPS coordinates or require user input, this system provides a simple yes or no answer based on real-time network signals.
Stopping fraud before it happens
The goal is to add a layer of protection during sensitive activities, such as a high-value bank transfer. If a transaction occurs while a phone suddenly appears to be roaming in another country, it can trigger extra security checks. This happens without the user needing to do anything, making the experience easier for the customer while keeping their personal information private.
Nico V. Alcoseba, First Vice President and Head of Product Management and Innovations at PLDT Enterprise, says that the feedback from corporate customers helped them prioritize features that have the most impact. He explains that expanding their suite of certified tools reinforces a commitment to building digital trust without making things harder for the end user.
A growing suite of security tools
This latest development follows the launch of a silent authentication solution called SilentAccess in late 2025. Both tools are part of a larger portfolio designed to help Pinoy businesses scale their digital services securely across different markets.
Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific at GSMA, notes that this certification is a strong signal of the leadership the Philippines is showing in adopting standardized network technology. By using these global standards, developers can integrate security features more easily across different networks and borders.
Looking ahead, the SmartSafe suite is expected to expand even further. Upcoming features include NetIdentity for verifying SIM and device authenticity, GeoCheck for identifying real-time network locations, and KYCPlus for enhanced identity verification using network intelligence.
These innovations are built on a nationwide mobile network and are designed to align with local regulations while strengthening the overall digital safety framework for Pinoy users.
