MANILA, Philippines (Aug 2026) – When a powerful earthquake disrupted regular communications and knocked out commercial power across parts of Mindanao, emergency crews and hospital workers were left struggling to coordinate urgent response efforts.
To plug the critical communication gap, PLDT Enterprise teamed up with PLDT, Smart, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, and local government units to deploy Starlink satellite broadband solutions directly to affected areas.
Bringing high-speed satellite links to the front lines
Field teams set up rapid satellite internet connections in hard-hit locations, including General Santos City and several municipalities across South Cotabato. The quick deployment restored vital communication lines for local command centers, rescue operations, and key health facilities, including the Malungon Sarangani Provincial Hospital and Alabel Sarangani Provincial Hospital.
While most cell towers and physical network facilities remained operational, commercial power outages caused widespread service disruptions. Starlink satellite setups allowed first responders and local officials to maintain reliable contact even without power on the local grid.
A force multiplier for emergency response
Fast communication is essential for saving lives when disaster strikes Pinoy communities.
“During emergencies, connectivity becomes deeply personal,” said Menardo “Butch” Jimenez Jr., Chief Operating Officer of PLDT. He explained that active connections allow people to reach loved ones, help responders coordinate more effectively, and assist communities as they begin rebuilding.
PLDT Enterprise Senior Vice President and Head of Enterprise Business Group Blums Pineda emphasized the urgency of backing up first responders on the ground. He noted that restoring connectivity at the front line acts as a powerful force multiplier, enabling response teams to assess needs faster and deliver support where it matters most.
As local communities move from immediate disaster response to long-term rebuilding, the company plans to continue working alongside local partners to keep emergency infrastructure connected across Mindanao.
