For twenty years, Rockstar Games premiered its trailers on YouTube, and Filipino fans built a ritual around it: alarms set, streams open, comment sections flooding at midnight. This week the studio broke its own rule for the biggest reveal of them all, and anyone who does not know the new schedule will either wake up at 3 a.m. to subscribe to Netflix or wake up later to a feed full of spoilers.
When the extended look goes live
Netflix confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres exclusively on the platform on Thursday, August 27 at 3 p.m. ET. In Manila, that lands at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28. The same video then hits the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel six hours later, which is 9:00 a.m. Friday Philippine time, free for everyone.

There is one catch for the eager crowd: Netflix has no free tier, and in the US its plans start at $8.99 a month. The six-hour exclusivity window is short enough that plenty of fans will simply sleep through it and catch the free YouTube drop over breakfast.
Why Netflix got it first
Netflix is calling this a first-of-its-kind partnership, and the streaming service is treating the trailer like prestige television. Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of nonfiction series, said the company is honored that Rockstar chose to debut “the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first,” framing the game reveal as exactly the kind of ambitious storytelling Netflix wants on the platform.
The two companies are not strangers. They previously partnered to bring classic GTA titles and Red Dead Redemption to Netflix as mobile games, so the streaming giant already knows exactly how much pull this franchise has with subscribers.
Not everyone is buying it. Some fans on Reddit called the exclusivity window a money grab and urged people not to subscribe just for one trailer, while others pointed out the window is so short that waiting a day costs almost nothing. Either way, Rockstar wins the attention economy: a trailer for a trailer already pulled huge numbers when it dropped on August 6.
The leaks it is racing past
The road to this premiere has been messy. Since that August 6 teaser, a hacker calling themselves CyberLeek dumped alleged GTA 6 gameplay and map details online, which we covered earlier this week. Rockstar’s parent company has since subpoenaed Microsoft and Discord for records it believes will unmask the leaker, per PCMag’s report on the leak fallout and premiere schedule.
That gives Thursday’s broadcast an extra edge: it is Rockstar’s chance to reclaim the narrative with footage on its own terms, instead of letting grainy leaks define the conversation.
