Rockstar just opened the doors to its Edinburgh studio and finally let the press go hands-off inside Grand Theft Auto VI, and the resulting flood of fresh gameplay details paints the sequel as the most reactive, densely detailed open world Rockstar has ever shipped. The reveal also locks in the date thousands of Filipino players have been waiting on: GTA 6 releases on Nov 19.

Rockstar’s controlled comeback

After a month of massive leaks and Take-Two subpoenas, Rockstar pivoted to a tightly managed rollout this week. It invited a small group of outlets, including IGN and The New York Times, to Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where an extended look was screened ahead of its Netflix premiere. It is the series’ first new entry in 13 years, following GTA V in 2013.

Game Awards host Geoff Keighley summed up the game’s gravity in an email to The New York Times: “Most blockbusters have an opening weekend. G.T.A. has an opening decade.”

The 69 new details, in one table

The IGN preview alone surfaced 69 brand-new gameplay details, from a returning six-star wanted level to a phone app that scans cars before you steal them. Here are the systems that stand out:

System What it means
Wanted level Six stars return after GTA V dialed it down to five
WAINK app Scan a parked car to see its value and registration cost before stealing it
Vehicle tiers Pricier cars need better tools, from a slim jim to a key cloner
Criminal Profile An honor-style system with no clear right or wrong, built from how you free-roam
Romance An optional bond between Jason and Lucia with no stat bonuses
Safehouses RDR2-style camps you can personalize, complete with working car trunks
Fast travel A Ryde Me taxi app that turns drives into full conversations
Lucia’s ankle tag Central to the story and to how the pair meet

A Bonnie and Clyde story you shape

Jason and Lucia are GTA 6’s dual protagonists, and their relationship is the narrative engine. Rockstar says their romance is completely optional, a roleplaying choice with no gameplay bonuses; players can strengthen their bond by exploring Leonida, shopping, hitting hair salons, or knocking over stores together. Lucia’s ankle monitor is key to how the pair comes together, and switching between the two characters stays available while you roam the map.

Cars, cops and chaos

Car theft has been reinvented for the first time in years. The new WAINK app scans a parked vehicle to reveal its worth and registration cost, and cars are now tiered by difficulty, so a prestige model needs a key cloner while a beater only needs a slim jim. The wanted system goes back to six stars, and police now learn what you look like and what you are wearing, so ditching a mask or changing your hair mid-chase genuinely matters.

When can you play?

GTA 6 is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the official Rockstar page now pointing to a Nov 19 launch. For a fuller read on what Rockstar showed, Dazed’s deep dive into the “unparalleled world” and IGN’s full 69-point rundown are both worth your time. Expect the conversation to keep running right up to launch day.
