Leaving your physical wallet at home is now a reality for Pinoy iPhone users, as the official launch of Apple Pay in the Philippines via Visa credit and debit cards makes contactless mobile payments easier than ever.
Local cardholders can now add their eligible credit and debit cards to the digital wallet app, allowing quick transactions using an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac at various retail outlets, pharmacies, grocery stores, and restaurants.
How to set up and pay
Making an in-store payment requires users to double-click the side button of their device, authenticate via biometrics, and hold it near the contactless terminal.
To set up the feature, users can open the Wallet app on their iPhone, tap the plus symbol, and follow the simple steps to input their card details. Once added, the service becomes active across connected devices immediately, while retaining all standard card rewards and benefits.
Keeping your payment details private
Security remains a core focus of the integration. The system does not store actual card numbers on the device or on external servers. Instead, it assigns a unique Device Account Number that is encrypted and stored securely inside a dedicated, industry-standard chip on the hardware.
Every transaction is protected because it requires confirmation via Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, along with a temporary dynamic security code.
Data from a global travel intentions study indicates that 97 percent of travelers prefer using cards over carrying foreign currency due to safety and wide acceptance. This digital expansion aims to support the country’s transition toward a cash-lite economy, making daily transactions smoother for both local consumers and international visitors.
Jeffrey Navarro, the country manager for Visa Philippines, stated that this development marks a significant step forward for local payments by combining simplicity and security to improve the transaction experience for cardholders.
