Sony keeps pointing “beyond the living room”
In Sony’s June investor Q&A, SIE CEO Hideaki Nishino steered the conversation toward playing outside the living room, saying Sony wants to break away from the idea that “PlayStation equals the living room.” He described a next-generation platform built around a “seamless experience” that can be enjoyed “naturally beyond the living room,” and he said Sony wants to deliver “value that is unique to PlayStation” rather than just acting as an alternative to PCs.
The Verge, rereading that call after Sony announced the end of physical PlayStation discs, concluded a handheld PS6 is likely and that it may be the main event. “It might even be the main course,” the analysis reads.
The disc business is already disappearing
Sony has confirmed it is dropping physical discs, and a handheld makes that decision land differently: you are not sliding a Blu-ray into a portable system. The Verge notes a handheld would be Sony’s first system where discs no longer make sense, pushing every purchase through the digital PlayStation Store. That puts Sony on a similar path to the Xbox disc-to-digital program that lets players convert physical games into digital copies.
A $600 handheld? Blame the memory crunch
Sony has already warned the next PlayStation will not be cheap, saying it has no plan to sell hardware at significant losses. According to CEO Hiroki Totoki, Sony has not yet decided on a PS6 launch date or price and is even weighing changes to its business model as memory costs spike.
That pricing problem is why early rumors keep getting expensive.
